What Happens if I'm Arrested?

You were just going about your day as usual—at least, you were until you were arrested or found out you had a warrant out for your arrest.

That puts a lot of stress on you. You’re worried about what comes next and what you can do about your situation. What happens if you’re arrested? The good news is, you have a chance to deal with your arrest before things get out of hand. Preparing now can help you deal with the arrest and your trial later on. That way, you’re ready for what happens and can face your claim now.

The Aftermath of an Arrest

When you’re first arrested, you’ll be read your rights, taken to the police station, and booked. That means your information will be put in the system, including your name, fingerprints, and other identifying information.

Once this information is put into the system, your bail will be posted. If you haven’t yet been arrested, you and your Chicago criminal defense lawyer can prepare for your bail. Your bail is essentially a promise that you’ll show up for court even if you’re released.

Preparing for Court

Once you’re released from jail, you and your lawyer will have a limited time to prepare for your lawsuit. You and your defense attorney will need to prepare a defense that covers the accusations the prosecution is making.

For example, you may have been accused of robbing someone. You may need to prepare an alibi that shows you couldn’t have been there at the time of the crime. Your lawyer can help you choose a direction and defense for your case that covers all the evidence against you. They can ensure you get the guidance you need for your case.

Showing Up for Court

Once you’ve done your preparations, it may now be time for your big day in the courtroom. You’ll need to be sure to show up on time and prepared for your trial. Failing to shop up may lead to you losing your bail money, and the judge may issue a bench warrant. That means the judge may put out a warrant for your arrest if you fail to show up for your court date.

Once you’ve arrived in the courtroom, your lawyer will represent your case and present your defense to the judge. Your lawyer can prepare you for the specifics of your case and the information you’ll need for your court date.

Get Your Case Dropped with Help from a Defense Lawyer

When you’ve been accused of breaking the law, you may need help avoiding the penalties being leveled against you. You may be accused of severe crimes that could lead to penalties and a record that will haunt you for some time.
