Woman Dies in Head-On Crash Near Angie

Shanda Cherie Cothern, a twenty-five-year-old woman from the Angie area, was involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle that ended her life. She was found to be at fault for the accident, speeding much faster than the designated limit in the area. She had a juvenile passenger with her at the time who was injured yet survived. That person’s name is not being released to the public. The thirty-three-year-old driver of the other vehicle was also injured but survived. His or her name is not being released, either.

Details of the Crash

The juvenile was taken by helicopter to a nearby children’s hospital. The other driver was taken by ambulance to the North Oaks Health System in Hammond. Cothern, driving an Oldsmobile, was at fault for the crash. Speed was a significant factor, according to the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office. The Toyota Camry she crashed into was traveling northbound, while she was going south on Alton Williams Road. The crash happened at 8:30 a.m.

According to reports, speed was the only factor involved in causing the accident. Cothern was not impaired by drugs or alcohol and both the driver and the passenger were using their seat belts. The other driver was properly buckled up as well.

Options for the Injured

When a crash like this occurs, the driver at fault typically gets charged with speeding, reckless endangerment while driving, and similar offenses. Because the woman who caused the crash was the one who died, anyone else injured would need to sue the deceased driver’s estate for compensation.

It’s always tragic when accidents cause fatalities, but when people are injured and their lives are changed forever, someone still has to be held accountable. Accidents caused by speeding drivers can result in long-term injuries and damages.
