What Court To File Cases & Documents in Riverside County

With over 14 physical court locations spread over more than 7,300 square miles, it can be hard to know what Riverside Superior Court location your case should be filed in. Typical in California, not all courthouse locations handle every type of case. Some strictly family law while others can handle civil, small claims, traffic and more in a single building. Simply finding the closets court location may not work if they do not process the type of case you need to file.

Where to File a New Case

So how do you know where to file without calling each location one by one? In Riverside County, as well as many others in the State of California, a current list of courts and the cases handled is available online within their website. Commonly these pages are called “Where to File”. These include easy charts by case type and zip code to take the guess workout of finding your court. In Riverside County the main where to file page is found here. Within the page can be seen different types of cases heard in the courts such as Civil, Family Law, Probate and more. You first select the link for the type of case, and then are directed to a pdf copy of a court order directing that your zip code will fall under a particular court location. That’s it. Select the case type and find your zip code.

Where to File on an Existing Case

If there is an open case and you need to know where to file documents such as responses or answers or other aspects of the case note that with opening a case, filing on an existing case is limited to the court where the case was originally filed. Several years ago the Riverside County Courts were “consolidated’ meaning you could file anywhere any the documents would process to the court of origin. Due to state budget cuts and restrictions this is no longer the case. To find where a current case is heard there are two easy options. First, look at the documents. Almost every California Judicial form has a “Caption” on the top of the document which lists the court location. In other file-able documents such as pleadings it may not appear but the case number should. Case numbers can be decoded to tell many things such as year filed, type of case and location. For Example a case number IND1700001 tells the case is filed in Indio (IND) and it was filed in 2017 (first two numbers). If you want to locate a location to file an existing case use Riverside County’s case number reference guide here.

As mentioned above, not all courts handle all case types and in a County as large as Riverside, some people may travel a bit to file there case. In many courts fax or e filing is available so if the distance seems a stretch check on electronic filing options available.
