U.S. Customs Power Outage Causes Major Airport Delays

U.S. Customs Power Outage Causes Major Airport Delays

This past August, airports across the nation experienced major delays as a result of an outage in the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s processing system. The outage caused travelers to experience up to 3 hours in waiting times in order to be processed for their flights. Although the agency worked to get the system running as quickly as possible, many travelers expressed their frustration with the agency’s lack of organization in the outage.

At the time of the incident, initial reports stated that there was no indication that the incident was caused maliciously. The cause of the event, however, has not yet been officially determined. In spite of the circumstances surrounding the outage, the mass crowds highlight other hazards that could present a danger to those in the airport.

For a few cautious travelers, processing times were expedited. If you’re a frequent traveler, you are likely interested in how to avoid long processing times.  Here, we will discuss how having Global Entry can help you minimize the dangers presented by mass overcrowding in the airport and how you can obtain access to Global Entry.

What is Global Entry?

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency sponsors the Global Entry program, a program that allows pre-approved travelers an expedited clearance through kiosks in select airports. Travelers interested in becoming a member will need to undergo rigorous background checks as well as an in-person interview. It should be noted that although Global Entry expedites a person’s traveling process, participants could still be selected to undergo further examination upon entering the country. If a travel violates the Global Entry’s terms and conditions, the consequences can result in the termination of the membership privileges and/or appropriate agency enforcement action.

Other Membership Benefits

Global Entry membership hosts a variety of benefits, of which being able to get through the U.S. Immigration and Customs line much quicker is central. Other membership benefits include the following:

  1. If U.S. Customs and Immigration is not open upon arrival, you don’t have to wait. When you have trusted traveler Global Entry access, you may be able to collect your baggage while other travelers are still queuing for immigration.
  2. Expedite the process for other nation’s immigration and customs. There are certain countries that will allow U.S. Global Entry membership benefits be applicable in their airports. For more information on the partnerships with those countries, visit the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website.
  3. You are able to keep your belt, shoes, and light outerwear on and also keep your laptop and 3-1-1 items in your bag. A great part of delays involves travelers having to check certain items in the airport’s screening process. As a member of a trusted traveler program, this tedious process can be expedited.
