The Sperm and Egg Donation Process

The Sperm and Egg Donation Process

Sperm and egg donation allow intended parents struggling with infertility and single individuals hoping to parent a child on their own the ability to create families. The sperm and egg donation processes vary, but it is essential to understand how each process works, because these donors make surrogacy possible.

At Baby Steps Surrogacy Center, Inc., we screen both sperm and egg donors for eligibility before allowing them to proceed. Once they have donated their eggs and sperm, we can match them with the appropriate parents. Sperm and egg donation are also used when the intended parents are donating their own eggs or sperm for fertilization, so knowing how the process works is useful for many parties.

Requirements for Sperm Donors

Fertility is not the sole requirement for becoming a sperm donor. Because the sperm makes up half the baby’s DNA, there are other requirements a sperm donor in Pittsburgh must meet if they hope to donate.

All sperm donors must be between the ages of eighteen and thirty-nine. Sperm donors must go through physical and psychological exams to make sure they are healthy and have no sexually transmitted infections. We then test a donor’s sperm to ensure the quality and quantity of their sperm is sufficient. Lastly, a sperm donor’s genetic and medical history must be clean.

Sperm Donor Compensation

If you meet the initial criteria, you can provide a sperm sample for more in-depth testing. Before providing the sample, you must abstain from sexual intercourse for up to seventy-two hours. If we approve you as a donor, you can donate sperm monthly and be paid for each donation.

Requirements for Egg Donors

Donating eggs is a more serious commitment than sperm donation because it is harder to extract eggs from a woman’s body. To be an egg donor, you must commit to a six-month donation period, be a nonsmoker, avoid illegal drug use, have a healthy body mass index, and go through extensive physical and mental examinations. You must also have good genetics.

Egg Donation Process and Compensation

If you are accepted to become an egg donor, you will begin daily injections to suppress your menstrual cycle and synchronize your cycle with the egg recipient’s. You will then receive more injections to stimulate egg production. Once you produce enough eggs, you will trigger ovulation with a separate medication, and two days later, a doctor will retrieve your eggs and implant them into the recipient.

Because egg donation is a significant commitment, egg donors can receive thousands of dollars for their time. Compensation for egg donation varies, so it is important to work out the costs and compensation before proceeding with donation.
