Playground Injuries Lead to Traumatic Brain Injuries in Colorado

Playground Injuries Lead to Traumatic Brain Injuries in Colorado

If your child has suffered a traumatic brain injury on a Colorado playground or they’ve suffered any other type of injury, you are not alone. Very year, hundreds of thousands of children are injured on playgrounds. A significant portion of them includes serious injuries, including concussions and other traumatic brain injuries.

It’s not all bad news. Kids need to get outside and play, and playgrounds are a great place to do so. Many communities shut down their playgrounds during the 2020 health pandemic, but as the weather warms up throughout the country, restrictions are lifting and kids are getting back to swing sets, monkey bars, and other equipment. It’s a great opportunity for kids to socialize safely outdoors and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine.

But what can parents do to better protect their children from injuries on the playground? And if the unthinkable does occur, what should you do to protect your child from further harm?

Playground Safety is an Issue for Everyone

As a parent, it’s important to evaluate your child’s play space, regardless of whether it’s on your property or not. Before allowing your child to let loose on a playground, ask the following:

  • Is the equipment safe and in good repair? Do you know if it was installed properly? How is it maintained?
  • Is the playground on a safe play surface? Is there constant sun exposure that heats metal equipment?
  • Is the equipment age-appropriate for your child? Do you need to be with your child while they play or can your child play safely without supervision? Is it a busy area with other parents and children?

What If My Child Injured on the Playground?

Chances are your child will suffer a few cuts and scrapes during their playground time. Many injuries are not severe enough and require nothing more than cleanup and a bandage.

But what if your child suffers a serious injury, such as a traumatic brain injury? Falls from playground equipment put kids at risk for a variety of serious injuries.

If your child is injured because of unsafe playground conditions, you might be eligible to seek compensation for medical costs from those responsible for the upkeep of the playground. Playgrounds must be in good repair with safe and well-maintained equipment.  A personal injury attorney can help you determine if you are eligible for compensation if your child suffers a serious playground injured and needed professional medical treatment as a result.
