Northern California Gets Easier Access to the DMV

A visit to the DMV brings long lines, an aggravating intercom announcing numbers that seem to drag on, and a day wasted on tasks that should take no more than a few minutes. However, now there is a way to avoid some of these troublesome trips as the DMV has opened up Self -Service Terminals at numerous retail locations throughout the state.

On May 2, 2017, the DMV posted an announcement that by opening Self-Service Terminals, customers would no longer be forced to visit a DMV field office to complete tasks such as obtaining a new vehicle registration card or license plate tag. Customers must possess their vehicle registration renewal or their most recent vehicle registration card to complete their transactions. The touch screen machine can be used in either English or Spanish and accepts credit cards and checks for payment. These terminals may also be used by customers who wish  to file for planned non-operation status. Many of the DMV Kiosks, such as the one located at the  Albertsons Store in Palmdale at 38727 North Tierra Subida, are open from 6 a.m to 11 p.m allowing customers access to service during much of the day and evening.

The first DMV Kiosk was installed at the University of California, Irvine on April 10, 2010. Since then, several locations have opened throughout the state including in the City of Los Angeles. Since the first Kiosk was installed, more than six million vehicle registration renewal transactions have been processed.   These convenient Kiosks save drivers an exceptional amount of time and the DMV hopes to add more services at these locations in the near future to relieve long lines at their field offices.
