Massachusetts Auto Insurance Requirements

Massachusetts Auto Insurance Requirements

Drivers who are new to the roads of MA, and those who have experience but may be registering a new vehicle will need to know current auto insurance requirements for Massachusetts.

MA is a no-fault state for auto insurance purposes, which means when you are involved in a collision, you will need to file a claim with your own insurance company to obtain an injury settlement. Continue reading to learn more about the minimum auto insurance requirements in MA and other coverage options you may want to add to your policy to protect yourself.

Minimum Car Insurance Limits in MA

Bay State drivers are obligated to carry auto insurance on any vehicle registered in their name, regardless of whether the vehicle operates or not. These bare minimum requirements are as follows:

  • $8,000 in personal injury protection (PIP) coverage

  • $5,000 in property damage liability

  • $20,000 per person/$40,000 per accident in bodily injury liability coverage

This is the lowest possible insurance coverage options you can have on a vehicle registered in MA. The PIP coverage is required because MA is a no-fault state in terms of auto insurance. Keep in mind that these requirements may not be enough to fully cover you in the event of a collision, so you may want to consider adding additional coverage options to your auto insurance policy.

Additional Insurance Coverage Options to Consider

If you are considering adding additional coverage to your policy, you can start by increasing the limits of your property damage liability, bodily injury liability, and personal injury protection coverages from the minimums to a higher threshold. If your injuries or damages amount to more than the minimum coverage limits, you’ll still be covered. Speak with your insurance agent to determine what limits may be appropriate for you.

Additionally, you can consider opting in to other insurance coverages such as gap insurance, rental car coverage, comprehensive, and collision. Comprehensive and collision cover you if your car is broken into, stolen, or damaged by inclement weather or during an accident; rental car coverage will cover the costs of your rental car while your vehicle is being repaired.

Gap insurance is something you should consider if you are financing your vehicle and are upside down on your loan. This means that you owe more on your car than the car is worth. Gap insurance will pay off the remainder of your loan if your car is totaled. Without gap insurance, the insurer will only provide compensation for the value of the car itself, not what you owe on it.
