A Jefferson Parish man has been arrested for hitting a bicyclist with his car and fleeing the accident shortly afterward. Local resident Paul Tucker was driving a vehicle while intoxicated at the time of the accident. He was later arrested and charged with a laundry list of crimes, including the following:
Due to overcrowding at the prison, Tucker was immediately released on a $12,550 bond and scheduled to return to court at a later date.
As you can probably guess, the injured bicyclist didn’t fare well and was transported to nearby University Medical Center with serious, life-threatening head and body injuries. Police found the badly damaged bicycle and a pool of blood near the scene of the accident, although Tucker himself was only located several blocks away from the scene.
Although the drunken driver denied being in the accident, police noted in their report that he was incoherently intoxicated and unable to form even the most basic of sentences clearly. Tucker vehemently denied being in the accident at all and could not recite his most recent travels upon request.
Officers made the choice to arrest him on suspicion of drunk driving. Despite his denial, a blood test after the arrest identified that the man was intoxicated well past legal limits at the time he was driving the vehicle.
