LA County Fair: Attractions, Vendors and 477 DMV Citations Issued

This year’s L.A County Fair was full of rides, exhibits, and parking tickets. Many had to come home from their long day of great family fun and figure out how they were going to pay for a ticket they never anticipated on receiving. Planning an outing for family or friends typically includes a “to do” list that plan for all the necessary ingredients for fun. Rarely does it include a contingency plan for the potential consequences that may transpire.  477 motorists are learning this lesson the hard way after this year’s fair.

In the recent DMV News Article, “Investigators Catch 477 People Abusing Disabled Parking Placards at L.A. County Fair,” posted on the California DMV website on September 25, 2017, it is discussed how people were misusing disabled parking placards at the fair in order to secure a parking spot close to the action rather than battling it out with the other fairgoers for available parking spots. Things turned sour for some when DMV Investigators cracked down and caught 477 people abusing disabled parking placards and issued them citations that require these individuals to appear in court and face charges ranging from $250 to $1,000. It was also noted that a comment will be placed on their driving record, but no points are assessed because it was not a moving violation.

When accepting a driver license in California, drivers accept the responsibility to follow the laws and regulations set forth by the state, regardless if they know all of them or not. Furthermore, when accepting special permits or licenses there are additional requirements motorists are expected to follow. With regards to the disabled parking placard, it is clear the California DMV is trying to send a message. While this story focuses on the perpetrators of the crime, it failed to mention the real victims, disabled residents trying to have a good time. I think if we could imagine a disabled veteran or an elderly grandmother having to walk half a mile to the fair because someone was cheating the disable placard system, we can all see the real harm.
