How Much Will a DWI Cost Me?

A conviction for driving while intoxicated (DWI) can come with serious long-term consequences. In addition to potential jail time and suspension or revocation of your driver’s license, the criminal fines that come with a DWI are devastating.

If you are facing a DWI charge, you’ll want to evaluate all your possible options so you can choose the best course of action. This requires gathering as much information as you can and knowing how much a DWI will cost you.

Habitual Offender Status

What does it mean to habitually offend? Typically, this means the accused has received past convictions, which may impact financial penalties, among others.

For example, first-time DWI convictions can include a fine of up to $2,000 with a potential additional state fine of up to $6,000. Second-time convictions can include a fine of up to $4,000 with a potential additional state fine of up to $6,000.

If you’ve received two prior convictions, you may be facing a fine of up to $10,000 with a potential additional state fine of up to $6,000.

Even if it’s just your first offense, a DWI can already be financially devastating.

Probation Can Impact Your Finances

Suppose the judge decides to let you off with probation because it’s a first offense, and your BAC wasn’t that high. In that case, you’re not free from the fines.

Probation is sentenced on top of fines and also comes with its own monthly costs. Worse, if you fail to meet the agreement made for probation, you may be returned to prison.

Alcohol Education Programs

Upon conviction, you may be ordered to participate in an alcohol education program. This is in addition to all other consequences, whether it’s prison time or probation.

Alcohol education programs range from 8-hour to 48-hour courses that vary in cost. However, repeat offenders can be ordered to attend the DWI intervention program, an extended version of an alcohol education program.

The amount you have to pay for the Alcohol Education Program or the DWI Intervention Program is separate from any fines or fees you have to pay due to the conviction itself. That of course only adds to the strain you and your family may be facing.
