Getting Your Driver’s License in California: Things to Know

Getting Your Driver’s License in California: Things to Know

So, you’re old enough to get your driver’s license in California now. Well, that’s great. There is nothing like having the privilege and freedom to drive a car. However, a car isn’t a toy and in the wrong hands, it can turn into a death machine.

That’s exactly why we have rules. One of those rules is to clear a driving test before you actually get hands on your license. If you’re clueless about how the whole process works, we have a few tips to help you out.

Get educated - Drivers education is very much required in California. In fact, it’s mandatory. So, even if you’ve learned driving, you are still required to be officially trained in the finer aspects of driving, which includes having a knowledge of all the road and safety rules.

There are places where you can apply for Drivers Education courses. Some of them will even offer behind-the-wheel training as part of the course.

Schedule an appointment for your permit test - In order to get your driver’s permit, you actually need to go through a permit test, which is carried out at your local DMV. However, in order to take the test, you need to book an appointment first. This can be done at the DMV website.

The permit test is a written test. If you pass, you will be provided with a California Permit Number. The next step to do is to book your behind-the-wheel test, where you get to prove your driving skills and apply everything you’ve learned.

Oh, before that, you will also have a vision test to check if your eyesight is fit for driving. These are done inside the local DMV field offices.

Make sure you have the right documents - When you go in for your permit test, you need to carry a few important documents – Form DL44, Form OL 237 (Certificate of Completion) and Proof of Driver Training.

Form DL44 is basically an application for your driver’s license. Make sure you fill out the application with the proper details before submitting. Trust us, you do not want to go back to the DMV again just to make changes or fix errors.

Practice - Remember that whole “practice makes perfect” thing? Well, that applies to your driving too. So, if you want to make sure that you pass your driving test, make sure you practice enough. The more you practice, the more confident you’ll be on the day of the actual test. More importantly, your driving skills will improve with practice.  Also, do remember that you need someone 25 years or older to accompany you in your practice sessions. They must hold a valid driver’s license as well.
