Best and Worst States for Kids' Car Safety

Every time you get into a vehicle, you risk an accident, injury, and even death. Seat belts and other safety features do quite a bit to lessen the impact, and when it comes to children, car seats are often the most important factor.

Unfortunately, between 2010 and 2014, 18,116 children were involved in accidents in the United States, and 15.9 percent of them died. These numbers come from Department of Transportation reports on accidents involving children and information from the US Census Bureau on how many children are in each state.

Best Five States for Child Car Safety

Curious about which state is the safest? Using information from all 50 states, five states were named the best of all for child car accident survival rates.

Massachusetts came in at number one with a 0.25 percent rate of death, closely followed by New York with a 0.29. Following them is New Jersey at 0.32 and Washington, which tied with Rhode Island with a 0.33 percent death rate.

Worst Five States for Child Car Safety

On the other end, five states rated the worst in the country for child car safety.

The worst five states for child deaths were found to be West Virginia at 2.16 percent, Montana at 2.23, Alabama at 2.71, Wyoming at 3.06, and Mississippi with a 3.23 percent death rate.

Causes of Death

While many factors go into determining the cause of child deaths in auto accidents, the most common cause was found to be unrestrained or improperly restrained children.

This fact brings to the forefront the importance of being certain that your child is in the proper safety seat for his or her size and weight, and that he or she is buckled properly.

When the Worst Happens

No matter what safety precautions you take for your child, car accidents are sometimes unavoidable. If a car accident that wasn’t your fault injured your child, you may be entitled to compensation.
